Origins of coffee in the southern mountain range of the State
According to tradition, it is said that the first coffee plants in the region were brought by miners during the Viceroyalty, as mining was the main economic activity in the region at the time, thus encouraging the introduction of products previously unknown in the area, including coffee, which was unknown as a plant and as a drink until then. Over the years and through many trials, coffee as a plant was introduced into these remote regions for those times. Through trial and error and over several generations, the coffee plant adapted to the areas of the region that had the best climate and altitude conditions for its production, thus covering portions of the current states of Mexico, Guerrero, and Michoacán. Amatepec ultimately proved to be the best geographical area in the state of Mexico for coffee plant production.
Cafextli: From Legend
to History
The ancients say that the cloud forest where the estate is located was a place of great tranquility, and it was said that whoever visited this forest experienced a feeling of peace that would accompany them for the rest of their life.
In the late 19th century, while clearing land for corn cultivation, some plants with red fruits were found. These were coffee plants brought to the region by someone generations ago, growing wild. Until then, the people of the region prepared a tea from leaves as a beverage, as coffee was unknown. So, from this discovery, the potential use of these fruits was investigated. Through trial and error, the first coffee beans were processed and prepared in a cup as a beverage. This beverage was offered to travelers who stopped at the old family inn and, in particular, to the revolutionary groups who stopped in Amatepec during those years around 1910.
